The Serrated Tussock Cafe in Braidwood offers more than your typical coffee stop—it blends the charm of a cafe with the warmth of a local restaurant, all underpinned by an inviting atmosphere that draws people in for both casual coffee breaks and hearty lunches.

Located on Wallace Street, this spot has settled into the fabric of Braidwood life as a place where visitors and locals alike can enjoy homemade-style meals alongside a well-curated collection of secondhand books. The presence of the attached bookshop creates a relaxed, low-key environment where customers can browse or settle in with a book, making it ideal for quiet afternoons or slow weekend mornings.

The menu reflects classic comfort food with highlights like rich homemade steak pies served with fresh salad and beer-battered flathead fillets paired with fries, along with warm scones that fit nicely into a lighter snack or coffee accompaniment. This balance makes it a good fit for a variety of appetites, whether you’re after a full meal or something to complement your coffee.

Service here is consistently described as attentive and accommodating, notably for families or individuals with dietary needs, which suggests a welcoming vibe for diverse groups. The decor, featuring original artworks and a cozy interior filled with books, contributes to a homey yet thoughtful atmosphere.

While the seating offers a snug and intimate experience, people who prefer more spacious or upholstered chairs might find the seating a bit less comfortable—something worth noting if you anticipate long, leisurely visits.

Best times to drop by include midday lunches or quiet mid-mornings when you can pair a well-made coffee with some browsing through books or a slow meal enjoyed at a relaxed pace. This spot draws anyone looking for more than just a caffeine fix—those who appreciate a calm atmosphere touched with local character and a sense of community.

We popped in to look at the books, and were so taken by the atmosphere that we decided to stay for lunch. So happy that we did. The menu had something on it for everyone and we were all so happy with our meals. This place is an absolute gem and I’m so glad we found it.

Always a lovely meal surrounded by books. A good selection if not large for both food and books. Only complaint is the chairs are not comfortable to sit in if you are a larger person.

What a beautiful little gem of a place. Searched for somewhere for lunch on Google and thought the Tussock would be nice. I couldn’t find it on directions and was almost going to give up when I spied it nestled back on Wallace St. As soon as I walked through the front door I felt the peace, quiet and serenity. Menu was simple but adequate. I had the Camembert and asparagus pie w salad. Lovely crispy pastry, the filling a little under seasoned but that’s probably my taste as I eat too much salt. Nice macchiato. I took a peek in the cake cabinet. Mistake…. I caved and had a vanilla slice with passion fruit icing. Delicious . It’s so nice to find somewhere that has completely homemade food. Chatting with Leah, I discovered the cafe has been opened for 21 ( or was it 24) years. Testament to quality food and customer service. The cafe also has shelves of pre-loved books for sale. I was thinking of one word to sum up The Serrated Tussock. Haven. Pure and simple
